Título

RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF ANATOMIC AND FUNCTIONAL OUTCOMES OF SCLERAL BUCKLING SURGERY FOR RHEGMATOGENOUS RETINAL DETACHMENT IN TWO YEARS PERIOD

Objetivo

The purpose of this study (a retrospective observational case series) was to evaluate the results of the Scleral Buckling (SB) in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in uncomplicated retinal situations. It was included the cases with medium severity and not regarding the lens status. All the patients were diagnosed with Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment (RRD) at the Hospital Universitário Walter Cantídio in Fortaleza, Brazil, between January 2015 and December 2016. Medium-severe RRD was defined by this study is characterized as primary RRD with proliferative vitreoretinopathy grade A to B.

Relato do Caso

There were 7 patients included in this study. The mean age was 36 years (±20,27) and there were 3 (42,8%) males. The mean follow-up interval was 12 months. All the eyes were facic before surgery. There were 4 eyes with high myopia (upper or equal) 6 diopters. The retinal detachment involved less or equal 2 quadrants in 4 eyes. The macula had been involved in the retinal detachment at presentation in 2 eyes. A definitive retinal break was identified in 5 eyes, including 2 eyes in which multiple breaks were found. No breaks were seen in 2 eyes. There was not intraoperative complications occurred during the drainage of subretinal fluid included subretinal bleeding. The preoperative Best-Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) was higher or equal 20 /40 in 1, 20/50 to 20/100 in 4, and less than 20/100 in 2 eyes. After the SB procedure the retina was completely attached in 7 eyes. The retina remained attached after the single operation success in all 7 patients and no further retinal detachment surgery was required. The BCVA recovered higher 20/40 in 3 eyes and less than 20/100 in 4 eyes.

Conclusão

Although most of the RRD in the current times are managed with pars plana vitrectomy the SB procedure is still a good option in uncomplicated RRD regarding anatomic and functional outcomes.
