Título

MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION AND BIOFIL FORMATION OF CANDIDA SPECIES FROM PATIENTS OCULAR INFECTION.

Objetivo

To highlight and discuss persistent ocular candidiasis by demonstration the molecular identification of the species and the biofilm formation levels.

Método

Biofilm formation and PFGE were used to characterize and differentiate multiple C. parapsilosis isolates recovered from patients presenting with endophthalmitis and or keratitis following surgery. All patients were treated with voriconazole or amphotericin B.

Resultado

C. parapsislos was recovered on average at least twice from all patients despite medical intervention. PFGE confirmed that initial and duplicate isolates were identical for each patient. Biofilm formation was detected for all cases. Clinical cure occurred only after a long period of treatment and removal of the IOL and or infected cornea tissue.

Conclusão

Candida species that produce biolfilm may be persistent and require extended treatment/ and or surgical intervention for improved outcomes. We believe that the difficulty of treat thoses cases is closely – linked to the high biofilm formation capacity of the strains, where biofilm served as a housing of fungal that help the persistence of infection.
