SEBACEOUS ADENOMA OF PLICA SEMILUNARIS

Objetivo

To report a case of sebaceous adenoma of plica semilunaris and highlight its unusual diagnose.

Relato do Caso

A 73-year-old woman was referred to the Ocular Oncology service of the Federal University of Sao Paulo in 01/07/2015, with a conjunctival lesion on the righ eye that had been developing within the past 6 months. The patient reported diabetes mellitus and systemic arterial hypertension, both under control, as systemic diseases. On the ophthalmic exam the best correct visual acuity was 20/50 on the right eye and 20/40 on the left eye. The biomicroscopy slit lamp examination showed a yellowish conjunctival lesion on plica semilunaris topography measuring approximately 4.6mm with no prominent episcleral vessels. The left eye exam had no abnormality. The intraocular pressure was normal and there was no ocular abnormality on the fundoscopy exam. Patient was submitted to photographic documentation and excisional biopsy with free margins was performed. The histopathological analysis made the diagnosis of sebaceous adenoma. There has been no evidence of recurrence or systemic malignancy at one-year follow-up.

Conclusão

The case reported is an unusual occurrence of sebaceous adenoma. Even it is a benign conjunctival lesion, it is important to investigate for systemic malignancies, once this association has already been described in literature, as also have with the Muir-Torre syndrome, with a worse prognosis.
