ACUTE EFFECTS OF SILDENAFIL ON THE OCULAR PERFUSION PRESSURE AND THE VISUAL FIELD
There are conflicts in the literature about the effects of sildenafil on the eye.
Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the acute effects of 50 mg sildenafil on the
ocular perfusion pressure and on the visual field.
This was a randomized and double-masked trial, developed between January and
June of 2021, at Instituto Cearense de Oftalmologia, Fortaleza, Brazil. Volunteers were selected
to have an initial assessment. After that, a pill containing placebo or 50 mg sildenafil was
administrated. After one hour, a final evaluation occurred. Both assessments included
intraocular pressure, ocular perfusion pressure and campimetry.
Thirty healthy volunteers were selected, according to the inclusion and exclusion
criteria, equally divided into the placebo and the sildenafil groups. Mean age was 40.80 years
for the placebo group and 32.33 years for the sildenafil group. No statistical difference was
found when analyzing intraocular pressure, ocular perfusion pressure and campimetry
parameters inside and between the placebo and the sildenafil groups.
The single use of 50 mg sildenafil did not affect the intraocular pressure, the ocular
perfusion pressure or the campimetry of the evaluated eyes.
