CLINICAL PROFILE OF NEWLY DIAGNOSED GLAUCOMA PATIENTS IN BRAZIL.
To describe the clinical and demographic characteristics of newly diagnosed patients with glaucoma and to correlate the variables with the different levels of disease severity
Retrospective study carried out at Hospital Oftalmológico de Brasília (HOB) in Brasília, Federal District, between the years 2017 to 2021. An analysis of medical records of patients over 18 years old and recent diagnosis of Glaucoma was performed. For data collection, the electronic medical charts of patients eligible to participate in the study were used. This is a descriptive study in which the veracity of information about the glaucoma diagnosis of patients was assessed in electronic charts. We performed an univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses between worse eye Mean Deviation (MD) and clinical and demographic variables.
A total of 70 participants were included in the study. Table 1 shows a mean age of 63.91 years (± 11.99 years). About half of the participants (51.43%) were male, 69.01% were white. 68.57% had primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). The baseline peak IOP averaged 19.37 (± 6.89). In the multivariate analysis (Table 1), the IOP peak presented P=0.001 with 95% CI -0.80 + 0.02, being directly related to the severity of the disease. In the univariable analysis we found that ethnicity (P=0,04), systemic hypertension (P=0,01), age (P=0,003) and higher IOP (P=0,001) were associated with MD from the worse eye. In the multivariable analysis, age (P=0,02) and higher IOP (P=0,001) remained statistically correlated with values from MD of the worse eye.
Considering the importance of glaucoma as the second cause of blindness in the world, it is essential to carry out studies that adequately characterize glaucoma in our population.
We can obtain the clinical profile of newly diagnosed patients in our service, which facilitates the identification of risk factors and the degree of severity of the disease at the time of diagnosis.
By identifying risk factors, there is the possibility of intervention in disease progression
