Título

QUALITY OF LIFE IN NON-ACUTE VOGT-KOYANAGI-HARADA DISEASE AT TWO TIME POINTS 24 MONTHS APART

Objetivo

To investigate the changes in quality of life (QoL) metrics at a 24-month interval in non-acute Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKHD) patients, and to analyse their association with inflammation, treatment and visual function

Método

Self-reported health-related and vision-related-QoL (SF-36 and VFQ-25 questionnaires, respectively) were administered to 22 VKHD patients at two moments (M1 and M2) 24 months apart. All patients have been participants in an ongoing longitudinal study since the onset of acute disease, with a minimum 12-month follow-up. Questionnaire scores were classified as an improvement, unchanged or worsening considering a difference >5-point difference between M1 and M2. Contrast sensitivity (CS) and visual field exams were performed at M1 and M2. Questionnaires scores were compared between both moments and associations with clinical, treatment and visual function data were pursued. The study was approved by Institutional Ethics Committee and followed the Helsinki declaration

Resultado

There was stability/improvement in QoL scores between M1 and M2.(Table) Significant improvement was observed in general health score (SF-36) and in ocular pain, dependency and mental health scores (VFQ-25). Maintenance of no systemic treatment or absence of optic disc hyperfluorescence were associated with improved general health (SF-36). In VFQ-25 questionnaire, improvement in binocular CS resulted in better ocular pain score; absence of anterior uveitis relapse, stable fundus findings, no use of cyclosporine or absence of intravitreal injections resulted in unchanged/better dependency score; and absence of intravitreal injections resulted in unchanged/better mental health score.(Figure) Subclinical signs of inflammation observed in the majority of patients did not impact on QoL changes

Conclusão

After 24 months, stability/improvement in QoL scores was associated with controlled inflammation, better visual function and no need for treatment reinforcing our previous results.
