ASSESSMENT OF CHOROIDAL AND RETINAL THICKNESS IN DIABETIC PATIENTS BY SPECTRAL-DOMAIN OCT DURING THE WATER DRINKING TEST
To evaluate the choroidal and retinal (Foveal) thickness (CT and FT) in diabetic patients during the water drinking test (WDT) using Spectral Domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
Prospective, observational and comparative study. Two groups were evaluated: 15 type 2 diabetic patients, study group (SG), and 13 healthy subjects, control group (CG). The WDT consisted of drinking 1,000mL of water in 5 min, and CT and FT measurements were obtained before and at 15, 30, 45 and 60 min thereafter employing the enhanced depth imaging (EDI) SD-OCT (Heidelberg Instruments, Inc., Heidelberg, Germany) with automatic real-time tracking. CT was measured drawing a perpendicular line from the outer edge of the hyperreflective retinal pigment epithelium to the inner sclera. FT (mean thickness in the inner 1000-μm diameter area) was automatically calculated by SD-OCT mapping software. In order to test the reproducibility of the CT measurements, the choroid was manually and separately outlined by two masked investigators. The correlations between CTs and FTs were performed.
In the SG the mean age ±standard deviation (SD) was 56±8 years, 7 patients were female. In the CG the mean age ± SD was 60±13, 8 patients were female. The mean CTs increased significantly in all time points during WDT (P<0.01) in the SG (299±86, 323±91, 336±102, 330±97 and 330±93 μm) when compared to the CG (235±81, 241±80, 242±80, 238±81 and 235±80 μm). The Mean FT did not differ significantly between groups, however the SG increased significantly the FT during the WDT when comparing to the baseline (P≤0,05). There were no correlations between the CTs and FTs measurements during the test.
WDT increased the CT in diabetic patients. The FT of diabetic patients presented a significant increase during the test when compared with baseline, however, there was no difference when compared with healthy subjects.
